As a music critic, DJ-Loc is a Denver-based MC who takes up rap singles and slows down their beat to a crawl, and the vocals to a drawl, then adds warped and filtered voices and exhortations to create new meanings. His style of MC is known as Chopped & Screwed, which is a music genre that was first developed in the Houston hip hop scene in the early 1990s by DJ Screw. The genre grew into popularity by the turn of the century, before falling back into the trenches of the underground by the mid 2010's.
